MTBs – To Fly Or Not To Fly

Well, I’ve just come back from dog walking in the snow. No chance of a decent MTB ride at the moment and my thoughts turn to sunnier climates. We all have places we love to visit, and one of mine is the Pelopponese in Greece (sunny and 22Cdegrees forecast for next week).

So, working on the principle of ‘ Seize the Day’, next year I hope to do some biking around that area early on in the year before it gets too hot – maybe April or May would be good. But, do I take my own bike – how much would that cost?- let’s find out.

There is a lot to consider if you do take your own bike. Firstly safety – will the Airline actually deliver it? I’ve sure had lost baggae on flight in the past. Then there is the excess baggage charge due to the weight of the bike and the special transport box as well as the cost of the box. And, there is the Insurance in case of loss or damage (there will be an excess get out clause too). The costs could come to more than 200 so is it worth it?

So how about on site hiring? You will have to check out your intended location, but in the Mani where I want to go, bike hire is available. These are either road bikes or hard tail XC bikes, and costs from 8 Euros a day – around 6.70, and expect a discount by the week of around 10%.

So, for two weeks I could pay out say 75 and save a load of money not to mention the relief of not worrying about my own bike. Maybe the hire version won’t be as good, but hey – take your own helmet saddle, tool kit and spares and still save loads of money.

So it’s down to you – if you must have your own bike for competition , you will have to pay the extra

However, if your biking is to be recreational, then probably the on site hire option is best – it’s the one I choose.

Your routes now await your planning skills – get to it.
